Art restorer John (Donald Sutherland) and his wife Laura (Julie Christie) move to Venice following the accidental death of their young daughter. While he immerses himself in restoring a church, she seeks the company of two eccentric British sisters, one of whom is blind and claims to be able to ‘see’ their daughter in the afterlife. Nothing is as it seems, which John must also come to realize, as he is unable to properly interpret his own dark visions and premonitions. The color red, and with it the memory of the raincoat worn by their deceased daughter, guides them through the labyrinthine alleys and canals of a foggy Venice.vTime becomes condensed, as past, present and future intertwine.
